Future Leaders – a UK-wide search for yound Antarctic explorers
The Future Leaders Challenge, hosted by RWE npower, aims to empower and inspire young people to achieve their vision of a 'brighter future' for themselves and for the environment.
Numerous university teams of four entered the competition by sending in a short film describing their plans for a local green project around their university and wider community. The team with the most impactful project will win a trip of a lifetime to Antarctica to experience the effects of global warming at first hand.
40 UK university students have made it into the final of the npower Future Leaders Challenge.
In October these finalists came together for an outdoor activity event in the Lake District. The course was specially designed to help develop team building and other key skills to deliver their project. These skills will enable the students to be more employable while addressing real issues affecting the future of the planet.
The weekend was attended by Antarctic adventurer and npower friend, Robert Swan, whose corporation, 2041, will be taking the winning team to Antarctica. Robert talked with passion about the affect climate change is having on the South Pole. He assured the competitors that a series of small actions and projects can have a real impact on the environment.
Clare McDougall, npower’s head of education programmes said: ”Our Future Leaders Challenge has been developed to find the next generation of Robert Swans: ‘agents of change’ with drive and passion, committed to discovering new solutions to tackle the harmful effects of climate change.
The winning team will be announced on 18 December.
